If you are separating (for real) from your partner and feel there is no way back, you need a Divorce Lawyer. Anyone that has gone through this will tell you confidently and very clearly that its a messy business. There are so many things to take into consideration such as;
- Money in bank
- Salaries and pensions
- Any existing agreements
Who to call?
This is all before looking at the emotional turmoil as that is something you cannot avoid either. We recommend that you speak to a Divorce Lawyer at this company. They are fair and reasonable, we have known quite a few people who have gone here and they have received good advice.
Divorce and the process
First thing you need to do is try and come to an agreement that either party will honour. This could be around the property, assets, money, kids. If you have an agreement before you speak to a divorce lawyer then you may not incur a massive invoice / bill. Some divorce lawyers will let you pay your bill up, however some require lump sum payments. This question must be asked at the offset.
If your partner goes to your family lawyer first, then the firm cannot and will not represent you. The judge needs to see that both parties (people) are getting good advice for their best interest, two separate firms will be needed for this. 1 divorce or family lawyer per person.
What to expect
If you have a meeting with a lawyer and feel they are right for you moving forward with your divorce, ask to retain their services. Get an understanding of what you can expect from them, we have heard that some lawyers don’t offer advice unless asked. Whereas what you ideally want is someone who will keep you right.
